After eating at a little cafe that had the most amazing maple syrup Iâve ever tasted, we walk back into the cold December air. The trees and cars in the small town are covered with snow, but the sidewalks and roads have been cleared. Itâs a picturesque little village with brick buildings and glass front shops, all featuring Christmas-themed displays.
Molly has coffee from the cafe in one handâwhich she swears is almost as good as the coffee she makesâand loops her other arm through mine as we walk down the sidewalk. She must be worried sheâll see someone she knows. Either that or sheâs freezing.
âI feel like any moment weâre going to meet a woman named Holly whoâs trying to save the townâs Christmas tree farm, just for some big-city schmuck to barge in and try to buy the property from under her so he can build condos on it.â
Molly bursts out laughing. âWhat are you talking about?â
âThis town looks like a Hallmark movie waiting to happen,â I whisper conspiratorially.
Molly uses her shoulder to shove me, but sheâs laughing under her breath. A blonde woman dressed in a red velvet dress walks past us. She smiles and says good morning; Molly and I smile back at her.
Once sheâs out of earshot, I lean in toward Mollyâs ear. Lowering my voice, I say, âOh my gosh, that was Holly.â I spot a man across the street with a briefcase wearing a long wool trench coat. âAnd donât look now, but thereâs her enemy: Christopher Christmas-Balls.â
She snickers despite herself. âBrooks,â she warns.
âHe wants to take the land out from under her. But little does he know that sheâs going to end up under him.â I waggle my eyebrows suggestively.
âBrooks!â Molly gasps, pulling her arm from mine and slapping my shoulder with her mittened hand. âIâll never be able to look at these people again!â she whisper-yells.
I laugh at her tiny hand slapping at me, and she starts laughing too. We come to a small antique shop and Molly steps in front of the door, blocking me from entering.
âCan I trust you to behave yourself? This is my favorite shop and I don't want to get banned.â
I place my hand over my heart. âScoutâs honor.â
She rolls her eyes but moves so I can open the door. We walk inside and the warm air from the antique store smells like cinnamon. A little old lady perks up from behind the weathered, wooden counter. âMolly Vanderbilt! Iâve been expecting you to pop in, what with your sisterâs wedding and all.â
âGood morning, Mrs. Nikolas!â
I shoot Molly a knowing look at the womanâs last name. But she ignores me and continues.
âIâve been excited to see what youâve got since last Christmas,â Molly says with an excited glimmer in her eyes. I love seeing her in her old-lady-antiquing element like this.
The tiny woman grins. âHead to the back. Youâll love the new tea sets.â
Molly squeals and walks down the long aisle to the very back of the store. She disappears behind an arrangement of Victorian dressers.
